08:30 - 09:35 | Emergencies in Sports Medicine Michael Kenihan / Mark Brown |
This workshop is primarily intended for allied health professionals and for other athlete support personnel including coaches who may have to provide to respond to, or assist others when a sports related medical emergency occurs when a doctor is not present.
While medical emergencies during sport are relatively rare events they require a swift, effective and well-coordinated response. The approach to on field emergency management taught in this workshop will follow the system used successfully in the Sports Medicine Australia Safer Sport Program which provides education about injury prevention and management to allied health professionals, coaches and other athlete support personnel. The workshop will utilise a scenario based approach to demonstrate and practice the basic skills required to improve the likelihood of a good outcome for various on-field emergencies including sudden cardiac arrest, concussion, suspected spinal injury and others.
